The basic idea is for a proofreader to advertise their services by doing free work. They hope that they’ll acquire some paid work this way. You are however, not required to purchase anything. The site runs on a volunteer basis, though there is a ‘proofreading skills test’ type deal before you can proof.

If you need a little help, but don’t have the cash for a professional this could be the way to go. It may take you a few days to get your worked fixed up, where a paid service will return in one day. The web interface is pretty easy to use. Just upload your articles in their web form, and wait for somebody to look over your stuff.
